Good day everyone!
Tuesday was the fourth lesson on TWC and so far, it has been a good learning experience for me. Truthfully, I feel like my reading capacity has tripled (due to the number of readings to be completed every week) and my ability to analyse and come up with my personal opinions on various issues has improved too!
Lesson 4
Professor Shahi focused on the topics ‘Drivers of World Change’ and ‘Change Management and Change Leadership’. It was an insightful session and we were exposed to the different drivers of world change that range from factors such as competition to globalization. Also, he talked about the importance of management and leadership-especially in corporations whereby both roles are equally important for the success and growth of sales.
First, I would like to talk a little more about what globalization how I think that globalization is indeed a major driver of change today.
The advancement in technology has enabled humans to move from one place to another quickly, be it virtually on the Internet or physically via the airplanes/vehicles/other modes of transportation. Globalisation has undoubtedly broken down walls that previously separated people living in different lands from one another. Thus providing them a platform to interact easily.
Moreover, Globalisation has presumably changed the world such that we now have free trades, migration, tourism, social media, higher efficiency rate Etc. What I have mentioned earlier are positive changes, but what are the negative changes? Well, every coin has two sides. It is an irony how globalization has promoted the ease of exchange of goods and services and in doing so, improves everyone’s lives. However, due to such convenience, certain countries take it for granted and use such opportunity to intervene in the affairs of others. Look into the case of the intervention of the IMF into other countries here: http://www.ethiosun.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Africa.pdf. To summarise, what the donor countries view as ‘aid’ may not necessarily be THE aid that brings about positive change to the recipient countries…
Moving on…
I enjoyed the video Professor Shahi played in class today! It is called ‘ First follower-leadership lessons from dancing guy’. Here is the youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ
It was very entertaining to see how a person decides to dance randomly in the middle of the place and consequently, the first follower picks up the courage to follow him. In the end, everyone joins in the fun and enjoy himself or herself. After watching the video, I finally realized the importance of the ‘first follower’ that his job is not very easy and it requires a great deal of courage to believe the leader and copy what he is doing. This is applicable to any business. We need a leader who is an enthusiast and is always looking for opportunities to improve the business. We also need a ‘follower’ who is the manager, to follow instructions and put them into action. Only then, the business can be successful.
Furthermore, Professor Shahi mentioned that opportunists are like eagles that soar in the skies and when an opportunity comes, they swoop in and grab it. I agree with his theory and I most definitely want to be an eagle that embraces change and make a significant mark in the world someday!
I would rate Tuesday’s lesson 8.5/10 because I have not only learned more about technology and WORLD change, I have learned the implications and importance of being flexible and having the ability to adapt easily! Only then, can one continue to be a rising star.
